A Day for Girls, A Step for the World

Loretto at the UN has a long held commitment to fighting for the rights of the world’s girls. Since 2004, Loretto has been a proud member of The Working Group on Girls (WGG), a coalition of UN NGO’s with the unified goals of promoting the rights of girls, advancing their societal status and inclusion, and helping them develop their full potential.

On December 19, 2011, after much advocacy from the NGO community,  the UN General Assembly approved a resolution declaring October 11 the International Day of the Girl, to be celebrated annually starting October 11, 2012. Loretto is proud to be part of this monumental day of celebration, discussion, and awareness. As part of our work with the WGG, the UN office is getting the word out and encouraging excited support and participation among and beyond our community.

The Day of the Girl website and The Day of the Girl Summit provide online platforms for girls all over the world to connect, participate, get participation ideas, and share their enthusiasm. With the help of the Day of the Girl Toolkit, Nerinx Hall’s Women 4 Women club is working with Webster Groves officials to have a Day of the Girl proclamation issued by their city and more participation plans are in the works throughout the Loretto community.
